Our health promotion plan
Working with local community members and agencies ISCHS has developed a three-year health promotion plan (2006-09) with the following priority areas:
Physical activity
People who are physically active for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week lower their risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and some forms of cancer. Regular physical activity is also good for mental health and well-being.
Food security and nutrition
Having access to an affordable and nutritious diet is important for physical and mental well-being. A nutritious diet helps prevent many chronic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and dental health problems.
Social inclusion
Having supportive relationships and networks with friends, neighbours and participating in community life is important for mental health. Belonging to a club, going to community events and volunteering all promote improved mental health for everyone.
Freedom from discrimination and violence
People who experience violence, discrimination and bullying are more likely to suffer depression, anxiety and poor self-esteem. Being able to live in a safe and tolerant community benefits everyone’s mental health.
In order to deliver quality health promotion to address these priority issues we work with many agencies including local government, education services, local recreation providers and community members and agencies
Some examples of our health promotion activities include:
- Our Rainbow Place — a fortnightly gathering and lunch for the indigenous community
- Partnerships with several local gyms to increase access to low cost physical activity for people of all ages
- Community Garden projects that increase access to nutritious food and also create opportunities for physical activity and social connection
- The Community Winter Breakfast Program, which aims to bring community members together over a healthy breakfast. Community participation in this event has been increased with community volunteers involved in planning and implementing the event
